Human Remains Found in Cooper Gulch Fire

Hank Sims / Thursday, March 14, 2013 @ 11:10 a.m. / News
Humboldt County Deputy Coroner Trevor Enright and Firefighters from Humboldt Bay Fire Protection District remove human remains from the swampy area of Cooper Gulch off of 14th Street in Eureka Thursday morning. The remains were discovered by firefighters early Thursday morning while responding to a fire in the gulch that was called in by a cab driver.

County Coroner Dave Parris just confirmed that a team from his office is investigating the discovery of human remains in the Cooper Gulch park area of Eureka, directly off 14th Street. The body is connected with a fire in that area overnight.
Parris told the Lost Coast Outpost that he received the call at around 4 o’clock this morning. A cab driver had noticed smoke coming from a swampy area of the gulch and called it in to the fire department. Because of poor vehicular access, firefighters battled the blaze — which turned out to be near a “large homeless encampment,” in Parris’ words — with hand tools and water from a nearby creek.
During the fight, they discovered charred human remains. Police, fire and coroners’ personnel are still on the scene.
Parris said that there is no indication of criminal activity at the moment, but the investigation is still in progress. The Lost Coast Outpost will have more on this soon.

We Should Probably Dress Nicer Anyway

Act natural! Girls are watching!

Apparently Coopers might be the hot new place for women to scope out men.

From a Humboldt Bachelorette post titled "Two More Places To Meet Men In Humboldt County":
"There's a lot you can learn from a guy if you meet him on the disc golf course. His behavior will tell you whether or not he's a sore loser. His team will tell you what kind of friends he has. The contents of his cooler will tell you if he's the kind of guy who needs a six pack of beer to enjoy a sunny afternoon. "
Make a note. So straighten out that posture and suck in that gut, single dudes. And keep your head up:
"I recommend chucking your disc at a cute guy's head and then apologizing and asking him to correct your form. Or if that's too stereotypically ditzy girl for you, kick his ass on the course and show that you can win gracefully by offering to buy him a beer."
Obligatory "we are not pieces of meat" line should probably be included.  So yeah, we should probably dress nicer anyway. And act more civilized. And what's with the male domination of disc golf, anyway? That doesn't even make sense. Let's work on that. It'd be good for Coopers and the whole sport.

And for those guys are off the market, we can continue on as slovenly as we wanna be, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health.

Get A Room, Creeps

Looks like the Gulchers have competition. Worse still, many kids access the park from the trails stemming off of dead-end streets.

Via the Humboldt Herald:

Psssst. Hey, Casanova. It has come to our attention that you need a few pointers on how to keep your “secret” encounters secret.

Moving your play dates outside the office is a good first step. You’re a fast learner.

But on Wednesday afternoon, when you had that, shall we say, meeting in a red SUV tucked in the hidden reaches of a dead end street at Cooper Gulch? Way too obvious. Even that semi-secluded nook has witnesses.

Your truck, which you parked a couple blocks away, is too recognizable. Not to mention your own fine self — people know your mug. Hurrying along while looking over your shoulder like a nervous dude on a secret mission only attracts attention.

Your lunchtime rendezvous lasted about 40 minutes. You were seen both coming and going — let’s make that leaving and arriving. You departed the scene a little after 2pm. Your, uh, colleague, the lady in the red SUV, drove away two minutes later.

The point is this: if you want to keep these matters on the down low you might consider an actually private spot further outside city limits. Unless you get a thrill in the risk of being seen. In which case you should feel breathlessly busted.

G.U.L.C.H.ers

Live music at Cooper Gulch? This may well be the first time in 2010 this has occurred. Someone Alta-Vista that for us, please.

Despite the hokey acronym, we at CDHQ applaud Brian Millet and follow it with a heartfelt "What He Said."

Overall Discourse Ranking: ACE (plus an honorary "Go Ahead And Play Through" mention).

From Andrew Goff in the North Coast Journal:

Make sure to make your way down to Cooper Gulch — or if it rains, the Eureka Muni — at 8:30 p.m. for Cocoa and Caroling. The baseball field will be transformed into an amphitheater and host performances by the Eureka High Jazz Ensemble and the HSU Choir, groups that could undoubtedly sing “Jingle Bells” correctly if you asked them. Mocha Motion will be on hand to heat up the cocoa

Wanna know where your cocoa dollar goes? The event will also act as a kick off for the City of Eureka’s new event-based teen (12-17) service learning program G.U.L.C.H. — Growing Unity, Leadership, Community and Health. Program leader Brian Millet understands that the Cooper Gulch park area has a rough reputation, but believes “it should be one of the facilities in Eureka we are proudest of.” In the coming months, G.U.L.C.H. plans to get youth involved in their community by hosting monthly teen events, Cooper Gulch park cleanups and skateboard workshops to name a few. If you’d like to get involved, call Brian at 441-4224.

Bones and more bones

From the Times Standard:

The recent finding was not the first time human bones have been found in the estimated 40 acre wood-lot a few blocks from Eureka High. In February of 2006, a right femur bone was discovered by a dog in some bushes on the edge of the gulch near 14th and P streets. A resident reported finding a left femur -- the largest bone in the body -- in the same area in June of 2007, with a third femur found the following year…
